What Is An Arborist?

Posted on July 26 2013

An arborist, also known as an arboriculturist, is someone who cultivates, manages, and studies trees and other woody plants. However, an arborist is not someone who manages forests. Sometimes known as a tree surgeon, an arborist is responsible for keeping individual trees and shrubs healthy, often working in conjunction with landscaping companies, governments, and any individual who has a tree in need of care.

One of the most common tasks for an arborist is removing tree branches and limbs from around power lines. Tree branches that surround power lines pose several dangers, including falling and bringing the power line down. Because it takes a special touch to remove branches both effectively and without harming the tree, a professional arborist is usually contacted.

Arborists are also contacted if there are branches growing over a roof that are in danger of falling. Falling branches can damage roofs, knocking shingles loose and clogging gutters. Branches that have become dead or damaged are prime choices for removal, as they are more likely to fall.

There are several methods of working on trees. Some arborists climb the tree itself, while others use ladders or mechanical lifts. Climbing the tree using a rope is the least invasive method of working, and is preferred by many arborists. If the tree is being removed completely, boots with spikes on them may be used to climb. These will leave holes in the trunk, wounding the tree, so are not used on trees that will be kept.

Training varies when it comes to learning the trade, however additional certifications are needed if the arborist plans on working near power lines. They must be able to follow the government's safety guidelines regarding minimum distances between limbs and power lines.

Arborists are quite useful if a tree has been damaged and the property owner wishes to save it. Many types of damage to trees can be repaired. For example, if a tree is diseased, an arborist can help find treatment options. If a tree has been damaged due to extreme weather or an accident, an arborist may be able to save the tree. For example, if wind has weakened the tree's roots and it's hold on the ground, splints can be used to stabilize the tree until the roots can recover and re-anchor the tree.

The last major task that arborists can help with is the removal of trees or stumps. Because of their extensive root system, stumps are notoriously hard to remove. An arborist is more familiar with proper removal techniques and can remove a tree quickly and completely. In addition to actually removing the tree, an arborist will likely have the use of a wood chipper or other method to remove the significant debris associated with tree and stump removal.

An arborist is an expert on all things tree related. These tree surgeons can do everything from saving damaged trees, removing nuisance or dead trees, and healing sick trees. If you have any problem with a tree on your property, there is a good chance that a qualified arborist will be able to help.
