Taking Care Of Pests On Your Own

Posted on July 26 2013

It does not matter what season it is, there always seem to be some sort of pest trying to invade our home or yard. Some seem microscopic and some are larger like mice or rats. Whatever the type of pest, most people want to rid their home of it.

Some pest invasion are just temporary and may not require a lot of effort to get rid of, but others may be moving in to stay and you will need to consider some options. If a house fly gets in you can pretty much rest assured that it will die within a few days, so no need to call the exterminator. However, if you see a roach, silverfish or mouse, you may want to take some action.

Of course there is always the option of calling a pest control company. If this is what makes you most comfortable, or the problem is bigger than you feel equipped to handle yourself, then this may be the best course of action. Research a few different companies and possibly ask for a few free consultations before choosing the company. Often times there may be a contract to sign for extended service.

If the pest problem you are experiencing is one that you feel you can try to tackle, then the first step is to research various methods to treat the certain pest you are fighting. The way you treat an insect would not be the way you treat a mouse or a persistent stray cat in your yard. The methods of treatment for each can be varied as well. There is anything from a more toxic spray or trap to a very green and non-toxic method.

Once you decide what you need to treat and how you want to treat them, you will need to find a place that sells the type of product you want to use. Most local home repair places will also sell pest control products of both types natural and more synthetic or chemical based. If you choose a more natural approach there are things in your own home that can be used.

A very simple solution to some insect issues is to take peppermint oil in a spray bottle of water and spray the entrances to your home, or even take it with you on a picnic to keep ants and other pests off of your food and you. Fleas can be treated using a similar method with peppermint, lavender and lemongrass. Mosquitos do not like lavender and lemongrass either. Essential oils are a very natural, non-toxic way to treat pests.

In a garden the best method of pest control is by planting companion crops next to each other that will aid in pest control. Also, some insects like lady bugs are helpful to your outdoor plants by ridding the plants of aphids. If you do an online search for pest control you will see the varied traps, sprays, and suggestions. There are always options no matter if you want organic, non-organic or homemade.
